It’s always a good time to change your furnace filter, whether it’s once a month or once a year. The filter helps a furnace and air conditioner run efficiently, as well as keep dust, dirt and allergens out of the home. A clogged filter will cause the furnace to work harder, increasing your gas or electric bill.
Heading into winter is a good time to have your furnace serviced by a local contractor. The cost is usually less than $200 and they will install a new filter, clean your furnace and burners, and check for carbon monoxide leaks.
However, if you’re handy, you can change a furnace filter yourself. Take a photo of your filter so you know the exact size, and then buy a single filter or a box of several for future use. There will be an arrow on the filter showing the correct air flow position when replacing it.
Filters are relatively inexpensive, from a few dollars at your local hardware store or up to around $30 if you have a special 4-inch filter in your home. Don’t procrastinate as this will save you money and your health!
